Blah blah blah

June 2, 2008.
Reunited?

Not too long ago, I Googled myself, as I sometimes do, and discovered a new entry on the first page of returns. Apparently, somebody who is not me has signed up my name at Reunion.com. Now, I'm pretty sure that I'm the only Armin Sykes in the country, probably the world, let alone in Beaverton, Oregon, and I think this is clearly supposed to be me. I find it odd that they managed to get my birthday wrong by a couple of days, however. So, who signed me up for this site? Or does the site have some system where they automatically create entries for people in an attempt to make it look like they're members? (And why did this site just show up, when they claim I've been a member since June 2004?)

A little time passes as I do some more Googling....

Apparently, the site does automatically create profiles for people. According to Wikipedia: "Reunion.com is known to acquire the real names, birth date, high school and colleges attended by individuals and create profiles on their behalf. These profiles may be intended to falsely draw in friends or family of these individuals."

If this is the case, I'm still curious as to how they got the wrong birthday for me, as most valid sources of personal info on me should have the correct date. I do hope that this is actually the case, though, rather than somebody being a bit creepy and signing up as me. I'd think if one of my friends signed me up (I can see them misremembering my birthday by a few days, anyway), they'd at least tell me they did so.

Oh, well. Hopefully if someone actually does want to find me, they'll take the remarkably simple step of Googling my name, and picking one of the appropriate pages at the top of the returns list.
